Can a Neglected Deck Be Restored?

Depending on the scale of neglect most wood decks can be fully restored to a like new appearance. If the deck isn't suffering from too much rot and decay it can be washed correctly and brought back to life in most cases. Removing all the gray wood fibers that are caused by damaging UV rays is generally not an issue. If an old failing deck stain is present, using the proper cleaners will also result in a revitalized deck.
In the case that the deck boards are too warped or can't be cleaned up enough, taking them loose and flipping them over may be an option. If washing the wood wasn't enough to fully rid the deck of an old wood deck sealer, then sanding the wood can help the process along. A professional contractor may have to be called in if there is some structural damage that may be jeopardizing the decks stability.
Most professional restoration contractors will be happy to look at a deck for you. Some might think a deck is too far gone but a contractor might tell them it is worth saving. Even if you plan to do the work yourself, having a professional look at the deck for you could save you some time and effort.
If a deck is just too damaged and can't be brought back to life, tearing it down and having a new one built might be your best option. However, most people are taken back by the transformation a properly cleaned deck can go through when it's being restored.
For the most part, as long as a deck is structurally sound there is good chance it can be saved. Assessing, repairing, and then cleaning the wood deck should all be a part of the restoration process. Once the deck is fixed, cleaned, and looks new again, a quality deck stain should be applied to the wood to protect it from future damage.
