TheSealerStore.com offers a variety of wood deck stains that are specifically designed for difficult to penetrate woods such as: IPE(pronounced epay) Mahogany, Brazilian Redwood, Massaranduba, Meranti, Pau Lupe, and Teak.

I have an Ipe deck that was installed 4 months ago. According to the information on your website, I made mistake by sanding the wood before sealing. I used Cabot's Austrilian timber oil and was very disappointed with the results. The deck has blotchy areas and did not have a uniform look.

You have provide some very helpful information on your website. Can you tell me what steps/products I need to use to bring back the natural look of my ipe decking? Thanks for your help.

Remove the ATO with the Hose Connect PowerSolve Stripper followed by the brightener:

This should open the pores and remove the Cabot's. Stain with the Messmers's UV Plus for Hardwoods or Defy for Hardwoods(Light Walnut). These are our top selling products for IPE.

We installed an ipe deck last summer and really love the color when it is wet.

We are sealing it for the first time this year. We bought the Messmer's cleaner part A and Messmer's UV Plus in natural color. Our hope is that the sealed deck will look like the wet wood.

The cleaner seemed to take color out - it ran off like the color was painted on the wood.

My questions:
1. How long should we let it dry? It was power washed yesterday, but rain is expected for the next several days. Do we need to wait 3 dry days or so, or will the ipe density allow us to do it sooner?

2. Will we get the color we want with the natural sealer? Should I have bought the mahagony color? If so, is there an colorant that can be added to the natural, or do need to order the other sealer?

You should allow the wood to dry for 24-48 hours proior to applying a stain.

The Messmers Natural Color will give the color that you desire. It will leave a beautiful "Wet" look.

I have two hardwood decks (not Ipe, but very similar - I think some type of Malyasian wood) that were built and sealed two years ago. The carpenters were talented but not knowledgable - neither was i at the time about the nature of the hardwood. I trusted them to find what was best and they ended up doing what they were used to doing - clear exterior polyurethane. It bubbled, did not soak in well, and the decks are now pretty ugly.
I want to prepare the wood properly and seal it with your hardwood stain (natural). Should I strip as you recommend (you didn't specify for polyurethane) and which stripper works on poly? Or am I into sanding? All the screw hole were plugged individually with cedar plugs so I would like to maintain the deck as pristeen as possible. please advise - jim Greer, lexington, ky.

Strippers will not remove polyurethane. Unfortunately you will need to sand the entire deck to remove the poly. After the finish is removed I would suggest a light cleaning to open the pores with an oxygenated cleaner. A transparent tinted penetrating finish is the way to go after you are done. We carry many brands: Messmers, Defy for Hardwoods, Penofin Exotic to name a few.

Greetings

I live southwest of Fort Worth, Texas. I have a cedar board house and cedar board decking. We are very exposed and receive a lot of direct sunlight. What products do I need to protect my surfaces? Thanks!

Jep-

All of our products will work for your scenario. Keep in mind though that the higher the solids the better the UV protection. I would suggest products like: TWP 500 series, Wood Tux, Penofin Red Label. The TWP is our number one selling product.

I have a one-year old Brazilian Redwood deck that was originally sealed with Sikkens 12-months ago but it was pealing badly after just one year. I've had it sanded completely and now am looking for the best product to restore its original deep reds. It seems like Messmers or TWP 500 would be good choices.

What are the pros/cons to each? I'm in Boulder Colorado and we get a lot of sun. I have about 1,700 sq ft of deck, how much sealer will I need? Many thanks.

TheSealerStore said...

Both the TWP and the Messmers would be a great choice for your hardwood deck. Since your wood is extremely hard, the wood will need to be recoated on an annual basis. Both of the products will be easier to maintain as they penetrate into the wood and will not be prone to peeling. They can easliy be recoated and or removed without sanding the entire deck. Make sure to not over apply as too much stain can result in premature product failure.

Two 5 gallon pails should cover the 1700 feet.

From a pure durability standpoint, which product (TWP, Messmers, or something else) would you recommend?

From an ease of application standpoint, what would you recommend?

Is there any product that will last longer than one year?

Thanks!

Unfortunately nothing will last more then one year on Hardwoods. It is the nature of the wood not the stains. Both Messmers and TWP will offer about the same in durability and both apply the same.

So my builder came up, sanded the entire (Brazilian Redwood) deck, powerwashed it, wiped it down with acetone (waited a few days) and then applied Messmers for Hardwoods. This took weeks and the deck looks *WORSE*. It is very splotchy with some areas "dry" (like they have no sealer) and some tacky and sticky (like there is too much). Then they tried doing a *light* sand and applying more Messmers. Still looks crappy. Please advise what I should do now (besides not use this builder). Was sanding a bad idea? Thanks.

TheSealerStore said...

Sorry you had so much trouble. Sanding unevenly can cause the wood to take the stain differently. This is most likely why it is blotchy and uneven. I would try stripping the deck down and starting over. Keep away from sanding.

Do you have any experience with Boodge's? (http://www.boodge.com/) They offer good warranties and penetrate the wood with oil as opposed to sitting on top like most sealers. Folks here in Colorado seem to like it for Braz Hardwoods. Any thoughts?

TheSealerStore said...

Sorry but I have never heard of that brand.

I have a Ipe deck that is now four years old. Every year I clean it with power solve cleaner and stain it with Messmers UV. My question is ther anything different I should do to it now that is 4 years old? What should I be cleaning it with?It still looks good but the deck seems to be getting darker and losing its original look to the point that it can be hard to see the grain in the wood. Thanks.

Cleaning and recoating is usually good 3-4 times. Eventually you will need strip it as the Messmers will build up. Stripping is basically a deeper cleaning that will remove all the previous coatings down to the bare wood.

I contracted to have my cedar board home cleaned and sealed with TMP 500. The contractor cleaned areas missed previously wetting vritually the entire house. The following day, in 38 degree weather, the TMP 500 was applied. What are the ramifications of having applied the sealant to a wet application. Thanks

TheSealerStore said...

Applying TWP 500 series to wet wood and at 38 degrees is not the manufacturer's recommended way to do it. These adverse conditions could cause premature product failure. Now this is just an opinion and does not mean that it will for sure fail. I would suggest contacting the manufacturer directly at www.gemini-coatings.com for additional advice.

I am installing IPE decking and using Messmer's UV Plus to seal the deck, should I seal the underside of the deck boards ?

TheSealerStore said...

No there is no need to seal/stain the underside of the boards. Just the exposed areas
