Why has my deck stain turned black?

There are many reason that a wood deck stain can turn darken in color or turn black. Please read the deck stain article as to why this could happen to your deck and the stain that was used previously:

My ipe deck looks like this photo and it is not stained. I pressure washed it and applied Messmer's Natural Oil on it last year. My feeling is the deck is black with dirt. It took painstaking pressure washing (possibly not high enough pressure from my electric unit) and scrubbing with the deck cleaner/brightener and there are still dark patches. Could anyone comment on how to strip the black off evenly to get the results shown on photo galleries? Do I need a 2000 psi pressure washer?

You need a deck stain stripper and a wood brightener to get the wood back to natural color. Pressure washing at a low pressure will help remove the black after applying the stripper.
